Joining Hands in a Worthy Cause

(Jefferson's industry catapulted him into rare air, joining Rep. Maxine Waters, D-CA), as the only other Democrat in a list of The 13 Most Corrupt Members of Congress tally that is, during better times, apparently reserved for Republicans.)
So far, sadly, business as usual. We can't expect these guys to be good all the time. But then something wonderful happened. Our elected officials who seem unable to agree on anything since the unanimous declaration of the thirteen United States of America, came together in a worthy cause. They were "livid," CBS reported, in "rare election year harmony." The search was unconstitutional, said they all.
President Bush, apparently to foster continuing accord, ordered the Jefferson documents sealed, saying, "Our government has not faced such a dilemma in more than two centuries." Which is on the money, but I think W was addressing a conveniently construed constitutional crisis (see here, and here, people are buying this stuff, but also here where "the court rejected the argument that the search was improper because it would have captured lawfully privileged confidential Congressional documents as well as the unprivileged evidence of Jefferson's bribe-taking" -- the decision is here), while more cynical observers might imagine the crisis to be corruption so rampant that even the bitter enemies of the left and right are forced to join hands to protect their status, their pensions, their perks et al. while America (remember her, guys?) and ordinary Americans (for example, those on Social Security) stand by and hope vainly for better things.
Let's take the obvious (I hope) a bit further. Even if the FBI raid were CLEARLY unconstitutional. would you expect our two flesh-eating parties to join hands and decry the action if this matter involved any issue other than its threat to inhibit their ability to act unethically with impunity? The alternative is to believe that their love for our constitution is so strong they were able to set aside their routinely hateful opposition in all things in common cause to preserve it.
Which explanation makes more sense to you?
